Behind The Lens
Born and raised in Colorado, I am inspired by the outdoors, especially the majestic Rocky Mountains. I believe a photograph is more than an object, moment or memory captured. A photo tells a story, elicits emotions, and offers an opportunity to share an experience. As a high school student photography has allowed me the freedom of creative expression. From capturing vintage street signs at night to shooting a collection of old Pez dispensers and various landscapes from my travels, photography takes me far away from home into the mountains and into the city.
Photography has changed the way I look at the world around me. Everyday objects have become pieces of art. I rarely find myself in nature without thinking about how the lighting might be perfect for capturing a photo or imagining how a particular landscape will look in black and white. Photography is like a fun, yet challenging scavenger hunt. Sometimes it takes hours to find what I’m looking for, and other times I see a subject immediately. Either way, I always find joy in my quest for the perfect photograph. Every shoot is an opportunity to explore and discover more about myself and the world around me.
I primarily shoot digital, but I love film lith printing, working in the darkroom and collecting vintage cameras. While I find everyday moments and objects fun to capture, my passion is landscape photography. My inspiration comes from the works of 19th-century Western Exploration photographers such as William Henry Jackson, Carleton Watkins, and Timothy O’Sullivan. This inspiration has prompted me to explore creating finished images with a vintage appearance using various developing techniques like lith printing, a process where I achieve an antiquated, pinkish tone in my landscape images. This technique gives a photo a mysterious yet dreamlike quality that makes it look like it was captured hundreds of years ago. I also use this approach with my digital photos using digital processing methods like split-toning and glass plate edits.
My portfolio captures some of my favorite images. Through my lens, I strive to create photographs that capture a perfect moment in time and elicit a sense of curiosity and wonder.
